Clash of Religions/just opinions on religion
I came to the ASU library to write a book review, which book in question was discussing a popular Chinese religious movement. During lunch time, I bought a sandwich and a bottle of grapefruit juice and sat outside on a bench to enjoy a bit relaxing time. It was really nice out, some white clouds in a clear blue sky, students walking, skateboarding, biking around the campus. After lunch, I decided to take a walk which activity a all-day sitting scholar definitely need. Then I heard this loud voice, preaching something. I went over to take a look. Obviously, three groups of people (two of them only with sole representative) were competing to preach their opinions to the students, which are not any other opinions but rather religious ones. One is clearly a Christian group, an older man and a woman (who might be his wife), warning the students about sins that they might commit and it's all going to be punished on the Judgement Day (they quoted Revelation on a big poster board. Another one is a one-woman show with a poster holding to her chest saying, "free hugs from...lesbian." During the time (about 15-20 minutes), she stood there holding the poster and shouted out sporadically for free hugs and there were several girls went up to hug her and some of them ask their friends to take pictures while they were hugging. The last group I really could not identify. A guy with a hippie look holding a book titled something about god and sex was trying to compete with the volume of the Christians. Apparently he was not winning since I could not hear what he was talking about even with several attempts to get closer to them. No matter what he was trying to say, it must be quite different from the two Christians. By the way, later a young man (who might be the son of the older couple) appeared in the Christian group holding a big wooden cross. He was also taking pictures of the audience at one time with a seemingly nice DSLI camera but he did not say anything. Many students gathered around them, quietly listening to them most the time. One girl up front asked a question challenging the male Christian but he did not directly answered the question or at least from what I can hear from some distance. Suddenly during all these, one weird guy with thick beard went behind the Christians and stood between the male Christian and the other guy. He could not make his voice heard so he made gestures behind the male Christian while he talked and people were laugh. He was more of a clown-comedian role in this whole "show". One audience in the crowd attracted my attention when he was loudly talking about how Muslims were like and how the government were wrongly fighting the so-called terrorism with tax payers' money and lives, and how those people who wished to have a war should go to fight it themselves and fund it with their own money. No matter what, all these are not new to me. I've seen religious groups fight for people's attention in the streets. What's interesting is how the students reacted to all these. I heard several were saying "this is too good" and taking pictures with their smart phones, via which I'm sure they will sent the pictures to their friends very soon. It's something funny for some, something serious for others, like the one asking serious questions to the preacher. Anyway, I am glad that I had the chance to witness all these. This show only seemed normal to American students but it is extremely rare in China. I hope some day soon this scene can be seen on Chinese university campuses. I also hope that the Chinese students would have some of their opinions on religion before these people preach to them.
